Individual Therapy

What is Individual Therapy?

At CBT Psychology for Personal Development, individual therapy can be provided by a Registered Psychologist, a Registered Psychotherapist or a Mental Health Professional under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist. In individual therapy, our goal is to help and support our clients while working on their personal goals. Individual therapy can be implemented in several ways depending on what the main concerns are, and the approach that will best suit these needs. The therapist works with their client to develop a treatment plan tailored that based on research will be the most effective to achieve for each situation.

Examples of effective treatments include:

What Does Individual Therapy Look Like?

Sessions are usually 50 minutes long. It is recommended to attend once a week when first starting your therapy journey. The first session involves an intake assessment, where your therapist will gather the information necessary to develop a plan of action that targets your presenting problem. The intake assessment helps you and your therapist discover what the problem is, why the problem is there and how to solve that problem.

You may be wondering how many sessions are required. Usually, a minimum of 8 sessions is recommended to achieve positive results and ensure that all parts of the problem or illness have been touched upon. However, your therapist may recommend more or less sessions depending on the reason for consultation. In sum, therapy is subjective and you and your therapist will determine how many sessions will be best in achieving your goals.

In a collaborative approach, your feedback is important. Although your therapist can help you in directing your sessions, it is noteworthy to understand that you are in control of your progress. If you find that a certain approach is not working for you, is it important to share this with your therapist so they can adjust their interventions according to your preferences. Registered Psychologists and Psychotherapists are professionals highly trained to keep your best intentions in mind and customize your treatment to fit your specific needs, likes and desires.

Goals For Individual Therapy

In any therapy session, the focus is on working towards your goals so you can go from where you are now, to where you would like to be. Focusing on your strengths, your therapist will help you to develop specific goals and work week by week on moving forward. Some of the steps involved in the therapeutic process are to:

    • Bring awareness to the problem and your thoughts about it
    • Develop goals that set you up for a successful treatment
    • Identify coping strategies and techniques
    • Learn new skills in managing emotions and behaviours
    • Focus on meaningful activities
    • Identify and utilize your personal strengths
    • Stay present

Protecting Your Privacy

Registered Psychologists and Psychotherapists take your privacy and confidentiality very seriously. Maintaining confidentiality for everything that is discussed in the session is part of a psychologist’s code of ethics. Individual counseling sessions are a safe place to share information without fear of that information leaving the room. This is also protected by the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA). Your therapist will go over and clarify the limits of confidentiality in your first session. These include situations when the safety of people is at risk.

Advantages of Individual Therapy

Clients receive one-on-one attention in individual therapy, where the therapist is able to be very thorough in understanding their client in depth. This means that the level of analysis and treatment is more intensive and comprehensive as opposed to group therapy. The pace of therapy is individually tailored to each client’s needs and can be sped up or slowed down depending on the client’s progress and preference. When a person is experiencing a crisis, it is recommended to seek individual sessions to receive all the time and attention of the therapist that is usually required in these cases.

There are many benefits to Group Therapy as well. It offers the opportunity to both give and receive support from peers going through similar situations and experiencing challenges as well as trying out the coping mechanisms learned in therapy. Listening to others with similar issues may facilitate a greater self-awareness.

Getting Started With Individual Therapy

Whether you are new to therapy or have seen a therapist in the past, getting started requires making sure that you feel comfortable with your therapist. Developing a positive connection with your therapist is the base to develop a healthy and strong therapeutic alliance. Our intake coordinator will help you find the best fit according to the issues that bring you to therapy and your preferred treatment approach.

When you call our office, our intake coordinator will ask a few questions to get to know more about you, specifically, what has been bothering you as of late and what you are looking for. The more information you are able to share about your concerns, history, schedule, likes, and dislikes, our intake coordinator will use her professional judgment in recommending a member of our team for you and will help in setting up your first appointment.

Finding the right fit is ensuring that you personally feel a connection with your therapist. This is best determined after meeting them in person. It is not uncommon for new clients to feel as though they would prefer scheduling with a different therapist after having a session or 2. This may be due to different factors that are unrelated to the knowledge and experience of the therapist, such as that they remind you of somebody with whom you don’t feel comfortable, or you just don’t feel a good connection. This is totally normal and we encourage you to reach out to our intake coordinator should this be the case, so they can listen to your experience and pair you with a different therapist that may be a better fit for you.
