Markham

Markham is a thriving city minute away from the City of Toronto. With a population of 328,940 people, Markham boasts one of the largest populations in the Greater Toronto Area as well as the 16th largest population in Canada. It hosts a diverse population and a large number of corporate offices for multi-national companies.

The area of Markham was home to the indigenous populations including the Haudenosaunee Confederacy (the Iroquois), the Huron Wendat, the Petun, and the Neutral before being settled by Europeans. The area was settled by German artist and developer, William Berczy in 1794. The city gets its name from William Markham, at the request of John Graves Simcoe, the first Governor-General of Upper Canada. Markham was driven by a thriving economic community that consisted of distilleries, breweries, and export products through the 1900s and used to be a bigger hub for export than even the are of Toronto.

The city of Markham has intersected the Don Reiver and Rogue river and is fenced into 5 municipalities, bordering Toronto to the south and Pickering to the east. Its location makes it a prime destination for the corporate headquarters of multinational companies to be set up.

The suburban city has rapidly quickly earned its place as one of the most diverse and booming populations in Canada. According to a survey from the NHS, it has a 72.4% rate of visible minorities amongst its populations. Markham’s status as the Hi-Tech Capital of Ontario makes it very lucrative for a wider range of people to come together.

Amongst parks, cultural centers and heritage sights, it provides an excellent space to walk around and absorb natural and historic beauty.  The Too Good Park and the countless hiking trails scattered around it make it a great spot for people to explore. It is also home to the Markham Museum, which depicts the story of Markham from its agricultural roots to its modern-day a metropolitan success.
