Group for Teens with Social Anxiety

Signs of Social Anxiety in Teens

The transition from childhood to adulthood represents a challenging time for teens. During the teenage years, in particular, peer approval and belonging play an important role in the development of healthy self-esteem and self-confidence. Lacking confidence and regretting past decisions both come with growing up. When inner criticism goes unchecked, it can lead to deeper problems. Feeling unworthy and unloved leads to low self-esteem for teens, and this contributes to a cycle of decision making that reinforces negative perceptions.

Signs Your Teen is Struggling with Social Anxiety:

  • They isolate themselves and feel lonely
  • They have difficulty interacting in groups or with their peers

  • They do not attend family outings
  • They are shy to participate in classes

What to Expect from our Group for Teens with Social Anxiety

This group is only for teens that reside in Ontario. The focus of this program will be on teaching socially anxious adolescents exercises and strategies to help them feel more confident in social environments using evidence-based techniques. Participants will be coached on how to challenge their negative thoughts and fears and will be supported as they take a series of small steps, practice social skills, and expose themselves socially.  This group involves discussions, exercises, home practices, and experiments where we will evaluate the results of their interactions as they build and improve their social skills.

In this group participants will:

  • Learn ways to manage emotions
  • Challenge their fears and try out new ideas
  • Learn to express themselves so others can connect with them better
  • Have fun while learning
  • Provide & receive support from peers
  • Be in a fun, safe, and supportive environment

Additionally, each session in our group for teens with social anxiety will explore a specific theme so that participants can focus on one topic at a time. In this way, participants will acquire the skills to bring confidence and awareness into their daily lives and learn how to take action. By doing this, they will overcome their fears, feel a sense of accomplishment, and gain self-confidence. When they learn how to connect with their peers, they feel better with themselves.

Duration: 8 sessions
